CARIES TREATMENT
Dental caries (decay) is the most common disease affecting the human population. It is a disease of the hard dental tissue caused by bacteria in the plaque. Bacteria feed from the food debris in the plaque and excrete acids which dissolve the mineral structure of teeth. Bacteria also produce enzymes that destroy the organic (protein) tooth structure. A cavity filled with destroyed tissue and bacteria is thus formed. The treatment represents cleaning of that cavity and restoring the tooth with an aesthetic composite filling.
ENDODONTIC TREATMENT
Pulpitis is inflammation of dental pulp tissue which contains the blood vessels, the nerves and connective tissue inside a tooth and provides the tooth’s blood and nutrients. Pulpitis is mainly caused by bacteria infection which itself is a secondary development of caries (tooth decay). In rare cases it can also occur due to trauma or allergy. The main symptom is a toothache provoked by hot and cold. The pain is usually stronger in the evenings and night. However pulpitis may develop with no symptoms (pain).
Periapical inflammation is a result of untreated pulpitis. The bacteria causing pulpitis come off the canal into the surrounding bone tissue and induce an infection. The surrounding bone tissue is resorbed and pus is formed around the root tip. When that continues an abscess is formed. The increased pressure in the bone results in severe pain.
Endodontic or root canal treatment includes removing the inflammed pulp tissue from the canals and cleaning the infection. This is achieved by mechanical cleaning of the root canals with different instruments and application of wide range of antibacterial solutions in the canals. Depending on the severity of the infection several applications may be required. Then the canals are sealed with special cements and gutta-percha.
